Seattle Demo Project

In 2009 the city of Seattle received 106 demolition permit applications.
Last year the city received 511 demolition permit applications.
This year the city is on track to receive over 700 demolition permit applications.

The Seattle Demo Project temporarily liberates these buildings from their original functions to become an effective medium. Fostering a dialogue between architects, artists, builders, owners, and the public.

HOW THE SEATTLE DEMO PROJECTS WORKS WITHIN THE EXISTING DEVELOPMENT PROCESS:

DEVELOPER

Looking for a return on their investment, the developer wants to avoid public backlash from local communities and often looks to the designer to communicate the advantages of urban development to the general public.

DESIGNER

Contracted by the developer the designer has the opportunity to experiment and open a dialogue with the general public about the importance of architecture through a series of design explorations withing the soon-to-be- demolished structure.

PUBLIC

The Seattle Demo Project provides an exciting opportunity to expose the general public to architectural ideas in a tangible way, and inspires the dialogue to advocate for good development, instead of simply being for or against it.

SEATTLE DEMO PROJECT The Seattle Demo Project is a cross-disciplinary cultural program that activates soon-to-be-demolished structures. It involves a variety of installations, deconstructions, documentations, performances, and public events that mark the end of the structure's life-cycle, memorializing the life of the building artfully. Seattle Demo Project was formed in 2012 by a group of young artists and designers who found beauty in obscure places and couldn't let it go. www.seattledemoproject.com First alki timelapse taken from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CdVg3lWs5Y All other footage from location.
